Quantity Surveyors in water.
A water QS works on the capital programme that renews treatment works, networks and storage, and on the maintenance that keeps them running. Almost all of it runs through long frameworks, target cost contracts and alliances rather than one-off tenders.
The work.
Treatment works, pumping stations and reservoirs. Mains and sewer rehabilitation. Storm overflow schemes, which now drive a large share of the spend. Planned and reactive maintenance under term contracts.
Most of it is a programme, not a project: dozens of schemes of different sizes moving through the same framework at once. A water QS spends as much time on the pipeline as on any one job.
The contracts.
NEC4, mostly the Engineering and Construction Contract under Option C, target cost, with the Term Service Contract for maintenance. Alliances and enterprise models sit over the top, sharing pain and gain between partners and the client.
That changes the job. Under target cost the QS is not only pricing change. They are tracking Defined Cost against the target every month and defending it in audit. Compensation events and early warnings are the daily work.

The clients.
The regulated water and sewerage companies, each with its own region and its own framework partners. The tier one contractors and joint ventures who hold those frameworks. The tunnelling, civils and MEICA contractors beneath them. The regulator’s five-year price reviews decide how much gets spent and when.
What a good water QS has usually done.
Worked under NEC4 Option C and can explain Defined Cost without looking it up. Handled compensation events in volume, not one at a time. Sat through a client audit. Understood a MEICA package well enough to challenge the subcontractor’s account. Worked inside an alliance and knows where the shared incentive helps and where it hides problems.
How careers move.
In. From civils, highways or other NEC work. The contract is familiar. The regulated client and the audit culture take a year to learn.
Through. From scheme QS to programme and framework commercial roles, where the job becomes forecasting and reporting across many schemes.
Out. Into gas and electricity networks, which run on similar contracts under similar regulation, or client side with a water company.
Freelance QS work in water.
Final accounts, target cost reconciliations and compensation event backlogs are the usual reasons to bring in a freelance QS for a defined piece of work. That is Delivery work.

Do you have water Quantity Surveyor jobs?
Yes, Permanent and Contract, with contractors, tier two contractors and client side. Most of them never reach a job board. A Career Insight Call is where to start.
Is NEC experience essential in water?
Close to it. Almost everything runs on NEC4, most of it target cost. A QS from JCT work can move across, but should expect the first year to be learning Defined Cost and the audit trail.
What is a MEICA QS?
A QS who handles the mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, control and automation packages on treatment works. Complex subcontracts with design risk and long lead items. They are hard to find, which is why they are hard to hire.
Is water work steady?
The five-year cycle shapes it. Work builds once a price review settles and can be uneven at the start and end of a period. Framework roles are steadier than single-project roles.
Can I move from water into gas or electricity?
Yes, and it is a common route. The contracts and the regulated clients are similar. What changes is the asset and the regulator's language.
