Two nations, each with its own way of owning and regulating its water, and Scotland with its own law. A lot of infrastructure per head of population, and a grid build-out that is among the biggest programmes in the UK. Permanent and Contract.

Scotland.

Utilities. Scottish Water, publicly owned. SSEN in the north and SP Energy Networks in the centre and south, both also running transmission. SGN.

Infrastructure. Transmission reinforcement for renewable generation, which dominates the market, plus rail, roads and onshore works for offshore wind.

Building. Glasgow and Edinburgh city centres, residential, health, education and university work.

Scots law changes how contracts are written and how disputes are resolved, and a QS moving north learns that quickly.

Wales.

Utilities. Dŵr Cymru Welsh Water, run on a not-for-profit model, and Hafren Dyfrdwy in the north east. National Grid Electricity Distribution in the south, and SP Energy Networks in the north. Wales & West Utilities.

Infrastructure. Rail, roads, and energy projects, including onshore works for offshore wind.

Building. Cardiff and Swansea, with a public sector building market in health and education.

A smaller market with fewer large contractors. Frameworks run for years, and relationships carry more weight than anywhere else we work.
