Where the work is.
Utilities. Thames Water, Southern Water, Affinity Water, SES Water and South East Water. UK Power Networks, with SSEN in parts of the south. SGN across the south, and Cadent in north London.
Infrastructure. Rail upgrades and stations, highways and river crossings. Also the largest cluster of data centres in the UK, west of London along the M4.
Building. Commercial offices, residential towers, fit-out, health, education and labs. The largest building and fit-out market in the country.
What that means for a QS here.
Two markets side by side. Central London building, fit-out and commercial property, on JCT and heavily amended contracts for developer clients. And utility and infrastructure work, on NEC for regulated clients. Most QSs stay in one. Moving between them is a career decision, not a job change.
Travel matters more here than anywhere else. A role on the wrong side of the M25 can cost two hours a day, and the best QSs weigh that before the salary.
