You won't be handed a slice of a job here. You'd own the commercial side of a project from the start to the final account.

Why this one is different

  • A main contractor in power infrastructure that is growing and hiring commercial people across several regions.
  • Cradle-to-grave ownership. You're not passing work on halfway through.
  • Private electrical networks: transformers, switchgear, HV and LV cabling. Not generic civils.
  • A hiring manager who wants someone contractually strong and trusted to challenge.

What you'd own

You'd run the commercial side of private network projects. That starts with the contract. You read it properly, find the risks and say so early. Most of the work is on NEC, so early warnings and compensation events are yours to manage, not something you hand to someone else. From there you'd run the budget and forecast, buy and pay the subcontractors, deal with variations and claims, and take the job through to final account. You'd work closely with operations, and the way you do that matters. The brief is firm but fair: you challenge decisions that put profit at risk, and you do it in a way people can work with. Negotiation is a big part of it. The aim is to get to an outcome quickly, and to know when and where it's worth pushing.

What you need

  • Contractor experience as a QS, with full commercial responsibility from award to final account.
  • Strong, practical NEC administration, including compensation events and early warnings.
  • Good contract review skills and the confidence to challenge clients, subcontractors and operations.

This suits you if you've worked in power, utilities, electrical infrastructure or civil engineering. Private networks or HV and LV experience helps, as does knowing transformers, switchgear and substations. It can be learned if you have the commercial grounding. The team also values people who are proactive, can work alone or with others, and fit the team.

The package

The base sits in the region of the market for a QS at this level, and we'll go through the numbers when we speak. A car allowance comes with the role. 25 days holiday + Bank Holidays with the option to buy/sell more. You'd be in the office around three days a week with the rest remote, based in South East London and Kent.

How it's being run

You deal with us directly. That means quick feedback and a short process: usually a 30 minute informal chat, then a more formal second stage, ideally face-to-face. You'll know where you stand at each step.

About us

We're clearnorth. We work with quantity surveyors and commercial people in construction, infrastructure and regulated utilities, perm and contract, and that's all we do. People call us the QS People. It started as a nickname and stuck because it's accurate. It's a small world, and we'll cross paths with most people reading this several times over a career, so a move that goes wrong costs us far more than it ever earns. That's why we've taken the time to understand this role properly before putting it in front of you.

The way in

We know what sending a CV out means when you're settled. Your name in the wrong inbox, your employer hearing about it second-hand, your details sat in a database you don't control. So your CV goes nowhere until we've spoken and you've said yes, and your name reaches the client only once we've agreed how. That's not us being saintly. In a world this size, one careless send and we've lost you for good, and you're worth more to us over the next twenty years than any single fee.

If the timing's not right but the role has landed, get in touch anyway. We'd rather be the people you've already met for whenever something shifts, six weeks or six years from now.
