Most QS roles hand you the scheme once the important decisions are already made. This one puts you in before they are.

You won't pick a project up at handover and spend the next year working out how it was set up. You're in at the front, alongside the Commercial Manager, while contracts are still being shaped: getting the terms right from inception through to signature, then either delivering them yourself or handing them on clean. The front end is where the commercial outcome is actually decided. This is a role that puts you there.

A quick word before the detail. This role is exclusive to us. It isn't on the boards and it isn't doing the rounds with other agencies. For you that means no CV in a pile, no being treated as a number, and a client who has chosen to hire selectively rather than cast the net wide and hope. You get seen, and you get dealt with properly.

What the role actually is

A project QS on the major projects side of a multi-utilities business working across power and water. The core is what you'd expect a good project QS to own: commercial governance, the monthly cycle and month-end, commercial lead for your project manager, compensation events, supply chain management, and CVRs alongside the PM. Around that delivery sits the front-end work: helping set new schemes up commercially, getting contracts and terms right from the start, and closing out a couple of existing projects that need landing.

One thing worth being straight about. You'll be running CVRs with the PM yourself, not feeding numbers into someone more senior's. If you've done that, it counts here.

Why it's worth a look

  • You work hand in glove with the commercial manager. At the bigger names a QS a few rungs down barely sees theirs. Here you're sat next to them, learning the front end and the contract setup directly, not waiting years to be let near it.
  • You join the company, not one tunnel-vision project. The business is winning a lot of work, so this isn't "get on that scheme and stay on it." It's variety across major projects, with room to grow as the division does.
  • The work is the interesting end of the energy transition. Battery storage, regeneration electrical, power and water infrastructure across the UK. Major projects by value, not maintenance churn.
  • Genuine room to grow. Major projects is the growth engine of the business, and they back people who can build, not just hold a seat.

It suits more backgrounds than you'd think

You don't need a specific contract background. NEC, JCT, FIDIC, bespoke: it matters far less than whether you can actually read a contract and pick things up. The view here is simple. If you can genuinely read and understand a contract, you can handle any of them. Some pre-construction exposure, helping set schemes up and checking terms before they're signed, is a real advantage, but the core of it is having something going on between the ears and being a doer who closes things out rather than sits on them.

Power or water experience is ideal, but the client is open-minded on sector. Skills transfer, and they know it.

Location

Wakefield is the hub, with genuine flexibility on where you work day to day, and on site when the project needs you.

About us, and why a chat costs you nothing

We're clearnorth. Quantity Surveying is the only thing we do, perm and contract, nothing else.

A lot of the best people for this role aren't looking, and that's exactly who it's built for. No application and no interview to begin with, just a quiet conversation to work out whether it's worth taking further. Your CV goes nowhere until you say so. Your name reaches the client only on your terms.

If the timing's wrong but the role's resonated, reaching out still works. We'd rather already know you for whenever something shifts.
